Curiosities about the city of Salò

Salò, in Latin Salodium is a city of Roman origin which in the last years of the Second World War was the seat of the Italian Social Republic, also known as the Republic of Salò.

Salò was already populated in the Neolithic period and around 1970, following careful excavations, a Roman necropolis was brought to light.

During the Middle Ages the area of Lake Garda, like all of Italy, was influenced by the church: in Salò the monks evangelized the territory whose main activities were fishing and agriculture (in particular the cultivation of vines and olives) favoring the expansion of trade.

A valid explanation for the origin of the name seems to derive from the fact that already in ancient times Salò was the economic capital of the area; connected to the sea by the Mincio and Po ‘rivers, Salò was the place where sea salt from the salt pans of the Adriatic Sea was deposited.

The city of Salò has always fought for its independence: it was disputed for years between the powers of the time but for a long time remained a faithful ally of the Serenissima Republic of Venice, as evidenced by the support given during the Battle of Lepanto, where the Riviera sent in support of the Italian naval forces of the Holy League (A coalition led by the Pope against the Ottomans in Cyprus) a ship that distinguished itself in battle: once the battle was over, the cannons were melted and from these they obtained the 6 candelabra present in the Cathedral of Salò.

During the Hapsburg Empire the Casino Society (anti-imperial movement) was born and cultural activities in general became more and more flourishing: in 1814 the Philharmonic society was born, still active today and always in the first half of the 19th century a public school of bowed instruments and an instruction room for the double bass and the cello. In 1858 the Mutual Aid Society was born, which won the silver medal at the universal exhibition in Paris.

On the side in the image a bust representing Gasparo da Salò, inventor of the violin, under the bust a sentence:

“It is not known if he is opening his chest to take out the violin or if he is opening the violin to put his heart” Gabriele d’Annunzio.

In 1943 the Italian Social Republic or Republic of Salò was born: Nazi Germany controlled the whole of Tyrol, up to Limone sul Garda, for this reason some institutions were moved including the Foreign Minister right here in Salò.

The foreign ministry occupied Villa Simonini (now the Laurin hotel) as its official seat and was followed by Mussolini himself, who at the time resided in Palazzo Feltrinelli (Gargnano).

Mussolini visited Salò a few times and the Resistance did not carry out major actions in the Garda area, a noteworthy act is the escape of a partisan leader from the civil hospital of Salò, with a shooting in which two fascists died.

After the war, Salò rediscovers its tourist side. In fact it is the site of very important sporting events such as world cycling championships: both in 1971 and 2001 it was a stage of the tour of Italy and in 2007 it hosted a European sailing boat championship.
